Over 3.000.000 chess puzzles

One playthrough of a map contains 54 different chess puzzles which differ in difficulty from mate in 1 to mate in 4. But every time you start a new run, you get 54 new puzzles out of the big pool of 3.000.000 puzzles.

Now for a fun fact: You could play more than 10.000 days without repeating a puzzle. And to be honest I bet you won’t get it, if there is some repetition in that time frame.

Scalable AI

Schachkampf uses stockfish AI and you can choose between 100 levels of difficulty. On level 1 even an absolute beginner can get a win, but on level 100 not even a pro player could beat the game.

I myself am at around level 40 and I just started playing chess with the development of the game, so I’m pretty sure you can beat it too.

12 different boards to play on

You have 12 handcrafted boards to unlock and play on, all in the style of 90s JRPGs. The levels differ from cozy woods or small towns up to icy woods.

It’s not as cool as a handcrafted wooden board with metal figures to play with in real life, but hey it’s also not as expensive.

Local multiplayer

If you have friends in real life you can play against them locally. If you don’t, you can still play with remote connect against your virtual friends.

Chances are given that you haven’t online friends too, in that case just play with yourself.

12 different starting variations

If you want some extra challenge you can unlock up to 12 different starting variations for your chess game. Each of them will lead to different strategies and tactics.

If there is interest in exploring these or other variations further just tell me via discord or social media. I’m more than willing to create a chess-like successor in the future.

Play in classic chess view or in a sideways view

You can choose in which direction the pieces can move. If you have chess experience you can play bottom up, like you are used to. When you are new to chess, you can play from left to right, like in other turn based tactics games.

I hope we all agree that sideways is the much cooler view. It’s the view I originally intended the game to be, but for popular demand I implemented the classic view too.

Classic chess overlay

If you come from a chess background and you are not sure which of the figures is which chess piece, you can activate a chess overlay which helps you right away.

For some people it seems confusing to differentiate between those figures, but I’m sure if you play this game more than 5 minutes you will pretty sure be able to recognize the pieces right away, even without the overlay. If not,...have you considered playing checkers?

It's currently in the making. I got some feedback how to improve the gaming experience for beginners. After that and language support I'll add it to the playstore.

The store entry is already there and I just have to fill with medis and the APK 😉

For your bugs I have to have a look after my vacation. The tutorial normally shouldn't have stars at all. And for the other part: wtf??? I had the same error a long time ago and fixed it. I have no idea how this little fella sneaked back in 😑

And I'm really happy you enjoy it. I missed a game like this too, that's the reason I made it in the first place 😁

The bug is finally solved and my next step is the appstore publish. It was a hell of a fight to find this damn bug and I had to pause from time to time and work on other parts of the game till I finally found it today.

Playstore release is done 👍

"You are an old dude like me who played battlechess as a child?"

Yeah, totally.

And thanks for making me feel I do not TOTALLY suck at chess!

Difficulty might be a bit to low. But I'm not good at chess myself and otherwise I couldn't beat it xD

I liked the game a lot and I don't have any remarks about the gameplay, except the fact that I liked it a lot! Pixel art is awesome ! Moreover, I noticed a small detail : the size of the pixel art is not constant in the ui, you have shrunk some assets, and on some games I've made it was pointed out to me like disturbing, that's why I'm telling you.

Thanks for mentioning this. To my own surprise you are the first who told me about it, while for me it's something which hits my eyes.

I remade the whole UI several times so I decided to use my old elements as placeholders and remove them when the UI is final...but somehow this state was not reached yet 😂

I mean id imagine its more easy to spot for you because you actively worked on it and already knew that the problem existed

The good thing is it's just 2 elements I reuse. The wooden board and the paper.

When I've readded multiplayer and added a profile with progress , that the UI is finished and can be redone 😁

Love it, though I'm bad at chess apparently...

Me too 😂

Cute game. I'm only 10⭐ in, but I dig the concept, and the LttP look is nice.

Stuff I think it could benefit from:

- "Next" button when you finish a stage, alongside the replay/exit buttons.

- Maybe have the enemy make its move when you lose, so you know more easily why you lost

- Some sort of animation for the checkmate would be cool

Will try to play a bit more later and see if I have any other suggestions, but it looks good!

Thanks for the feedback. Number one and three seem to be quick wins and will be implemted for sure during the next updates.
The moving after the win isn't as easy as it sounds, so this is somethign for the unforgiving backlog^^

Cool! Also, level 35 was quite the challenge. The enemy going on the offensive definitely changes the way I think

Thanks for so much feedback. This helps a lot :)

most of the colors seem strange, most of the main colors are too bright and the other colors aren't very visible (Which isn't exactly an issue) but the fact that i have to bring up the colors of the troops to complain basically just means good job

(+1)

Thanks for the constructive feedback.

Sounds silly but I'm kind of happy someone finally mentions the colors. I'm colorblind so my assumption was all the time, that the colors have to be awkward for normal people but no one ever said something like that.

But I can appease you, the color thing is an ongoing process and the actual colors are all but not final. I think I will look for a matching color palette and just use it instead of making it myself.

It would be great to see a tamerlane chess adaptation, and well, vertical mode for it, playing chess horizontal is weird

(+1)

First of all thanks for the feedback. I highly appreciate it, that you took your time to help me with some suggestions 😊👍

For the vertical chess l, yes I'll put that on my Todo list, you are not the only one wanting this.

For Tamerlane variant, I have to say it is sadly not possible for this game. I use a  stockfish implementation, which only supports standard chess.

When I someday have finished this project, I have already planned a second game with more variants but a weaker self build AI.

I haven't played it yet but I like the fact that it is horizantal. It makes it unique and it's an interesting twist on an ancient game. I wan't to play it out of curiousity.

I prefer the horizontal way too. It reminds me of old strategy and rpg games, like final fantasy. It will stay the default ;)
But for the majority of people wanting the vertical movement it's now added as optional way to play.

Aaaaand it's done. You are now able to switch the board perspective in the options menu.

If it is classical chess, I would like to see checks, mate and I should not be able to capture king. Otherwise please mention that it is special chess variant

You are right, just  wait one week. This is the exact reason why the ai is not completely implemented.

First I wanted to make an easier chess variant for beginners. That's why you atm even can't do Rochade. Now I turn to classical chess and when check is implemented it's classical chess again, with stockfish ai

Now it's done. I have finally changed the game and it is classic chess. Thanks for your review.
